Ecopark.is is a development project in the land of Geldingaár and Gandheima in Hvalfjarðarstrandarhreppur and has been in progress for 2 years.
The land of Geldingaá is estimated to be around 1600 hectares in size and is geographically very diverse, with extensive sand dunes and flatlands, partially covered with birch scrub in mountainous areas. It offers various interesting possibilities due to its size, location, and exciting connections to infrastructure.
Plans include the development of a sustainable circular economy with a change in land use. This includes converting some areas into plots for green production, various types of cultivation, possibly in a hydroponic or Airoponic environment for the pharmaceutical industry, support sectors for fish farming in fry production, and other similar activities. The plan also involves utilizing hot and cold water for processing and heating buildings in the area and exploring potential electricity production, as the land appears to be very suitable for such production based on initial assessments.
The area is also perfectly suited for the development of data centers or data storage facilities due to its favorable location and climate. These factors create ideal conditions for the operation of data centers, benefiting from natural cooling conditions and consistent access to renewable energy, which reduces operational costs and enhances reliability.
There are plans for material processing on the land, and detailed research has already been conducted, indicating that high-quality and abundant resources are present.
The goal is for the area, in its final form, to be entirely self-sufficient in terms of water and electricity. All materials generated from construction will be fully utilized, and the area will be able to create numerous new jobs and attract new environmentally friendly businesses with minimal environmental impact and increased prosperity.

A preliminary assessment plan for the project is underway and is in its final stages. The project is about to enter the public consultation and review process with the municipality in the coming autumn months.
